Dr. William Landon of the NKU History and Geography Department returns again to join us for the 13th Annual City Barbecue Food for Thought Series
Dr. William Landon of the NKU History and Geography Department returns again to join us for the 13th Annual City BBQ Food for Thought Series to discuss the life of Filippo di Matteo Strozzi: Exile, Restoration and Magnificence in Renaissance Florence.

Filippo Strozzi was born into one of Florence’s wealthiest families. But he (together with his siblings and parents) was stripped of his wealth and sent into exile by the Medici family for daring to challenge their ascendancy. Filippo’s father died tragically of plague while Filippo was still very young, leaving his mother, Alessandra, to manage the family’s affairs and her sons’ educations (masterfully one might add). Through years of painful absence from Florence, Filippo learned the art of banking. His new-found personal affluence and his political talents led the Medici family to eventually allow his return to his native city, where he grew his family’s wealth so that it would rival (and even surpass) Florence’s wealthiest families. His crowning achievement was building one of the most fabulous palaces in Renaissance Florence: a palace that overshadowed even that of the Medici's.

Dr. Landon is a scholar of European history and an international authority on the life and times of Niccolò Machiavelli. He has published two monographs, Lorenzo di Filippo Strozzi and Niccolò Machiavelli: Patron, Client and the “Pistola fatta per la peste” and Politics, Patriotism, and Language: Niccolò Machiavelli’s “Secular Patria” and the Creation of an Italian National Identity. The attention that Dr. Landon drew to Lorenzo di Filippo Strozzi has re-invigorated Italian and Anglophone scholarship dedicated to the famous, but historically neglected, Strozzi.
In the past few years, Dr. Landon has dedicated a good deal of his scholarly energy to bringing Machiavelli’s contributions to western political thought to the public’s attention by writing and performing Books That Matter: The Prince for The Great Courses. He has also written and performed a very successful series on The Borgia Family for Audible, which objectively re-assesses their notorious legacy. Dr. Landon's most recent production for The Great Courses on The Medici Family and their impact on the Renaissance has been released via the Wondrium label.
Outside of his academic interests, Dr. Landon co-operates a small organic farm and he serves as the Vice-Chair of the Campbell County Conservation District. Dr. Landon is passionate about preserving (and growing) family-run agricultural operations and protecting and sustainably restoring our environmental resources.
