We Suggest: Books & Movies with Environmental Themes

April is Earth Month! To celebrate, we asked our staff to suggest movies and books with environmental themes. Read on for their answers!
Books & Movies with Environmental Themes
Dry by Neal Shusterman
This book follows a group of California teens as they must survive during an extreme drought when the water supply has been cut off. Shusterman does a great job (in all of his works!) of making the reader feel like they are experiencing the horrors of the plot right along with the characters. This is a read which will stay with you forever, and will definitely make you think differently about how we use water in our daily lives!

Princess Mononoke
I really love Studio Ghibli movies; they have such a nostalgic feel to them! The main character Ashitaka is a prince who is cursed. In order to find a cure, he travels to a mining town called Iron Town. There, he meets Princess Mononoke, who was raised by wolves. He then gets wrapped up in a battle against industrialization and nature, which nature is represented by the forest spirits.

The Wild Robot
I recently watched the movie and loved it! I haven’t read the book it is based on yet, but we will read it for our Homeschool Book to Movie Club in August. One of the main themes of this story is the relationship between technology and nature. The movie also subtly addresses the potential effects of climate change by showing unique ways large cities had to become sustainable.

March of the Penguins
Who wouldn’t enjoy hearing Morgan Freeman narrate a story of determination and survival taking place in the harshest part of the world? My mom and grandma took my brother and I to see it when it was first released in theaters, and I re-watch it on DVD in the dead of winter every year. Each time, I’m enthralled by the gorgeous cinematic shots, entertained by all the cute penguins and enchanted by the soundtrack.
