The History of the Kentucky Derby in 10 Objects

Tuesday, April 15, 2025
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Drawn from the object-based history of the Kentucky Derby from Jessica K. Whitehead, curator of collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum, this presentation explores the origins and development of the famous race through the Museum’s collection of historic artifacts and archival materials. Through these physical touchstones of Derby history, audiences will discover the ups-and-downs of Churchill Downs’ early years, learn about the essential contributions of Black Americans, Latin Americans, and women to the track’s most famous event, and understand why the Kentucky Derby is so much more than a horse race.

This program was funded in part by Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
