Escape Your Comfort Zone
Do you read the same types of books over and over again? We put together three reasons why you should step out of your comfort zone.
Strengthen Your Intellect
Once you stop attending school, it can be hard to motivate yourself to learn new things. We learn what we need to for our careers, but we don’t often branch out to topics that won’t benefit our daily lives. Reading outside your comfort zone is one of the best ways to grow and gain new perspectives. Start by thinking of a topic that you would like to learn more about. Look online, or ask our staff, for a book that is a good introduction to the subject.
Become a Better Writer
Reading outside your comfort zone will expose you to different writing styles and patterns of writing than your own. Expand your horizons. Reading exclusively in your preferred genre may cause you to have difficulty writing something that is unique. Experience to a writer is like paint to a painter. The more rich the palate, the more rich the story portrayed on paper or canvas.
Build Confidence
Challenging yourself builds confidence. You might think that you could never make it through some of the classics like “Ulysses” or “War and Peace,” but how do you know until you try? Finishing a book that you previously though was out of your comprehension level is a truly satisfying feeling.
Take the Plunge
We put together four short lists of books in different genres. Decide which genre is the most out of your comfort zone. Click on the genre below to view some of our suggestions in our catalog.
