Early Literacy Services

The Campbell County Public Library offers a variety of services for both caregivers and educators to help support the development of early literacy skills in children throughout our community.

Early literacy is more than just reading together – it includes playing, singing, writing and talking together! We can help children develop important skills that they will need later to learn to read and be ready for school by doing these things every day.

1,000 Books

Our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a fun and exciting way to start your child on the path to success!

The program is open to all children from newborn to five years, and participation is free. Children receive a prize and sticker for every 100 books read to them. Reading can be tracked online with the Beanstack app or via paper reading logs.

Book Care Packages

Have your own story time at home by requesting a Book Care Package. Submit a request with your child’s favorite themes and topics, and the library will pull up to 10 books and audio materials for you to check out.

Please allow seven days’ notice for us to pull your request together.

Developmental Screenings

The library offers free developmental screenings for children ages one month to five years. Screenings can help identify your child’s strengths as well as any areas (speech, physical ability, social skills, problem-solving skills, social-emotional development) where your child may need support.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is available in Campbell County! Thanks to a partnership with local schools, we are proud to offer Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to children under the age of five in Campbell County. The program mails an age-appropriate book monthly to enrolled children at no cost to the participant.

Play N Read Bags

Help your child develop literacy skills by reading and playing with them every day. Each Play N Read bag includes a book, a related toy or activity, and a sheet with suggested activities and literacy information.

There are dozens of Play N Read bags to choose from. All bags are stored in the children’s area of each branch. You can also place a hold online.

Our Play N Read bags are developed with three audiences in mind.

Early Literacy

If your child hasn’t yet started school, there are Play N Read bags available to develop early literacy skills and get them kindergarten ready. The included sheet focuses on early literacy information.

Visually Impaired

The library also provides Play N Read bags for children who may have a visual impairment. These bags include books and toys that incorporate elements such as high contrast visuals, large type, texture and audio. The included sheet features tips and tricks especially suited to families reading with children with a visual impairment.

Kindergarten – Second Grade

Children in kindergarten through second grade can check out Play N Read bags that feature games and toys matched with beginning reader books that are made to support children learning to read on their own. The items are stored in clear, yellow backpacks for children to easily carry them around on their own.

Story Times

The library offers numerous story times for infants through preschoolers to start them toward a lifetime of reading. Visit the link below to find the right story time for your young one at the most convenient library branch location.

Outreach Visits

An outreach staff member will visit your location for an early literacy based story time geared towards kindergarten readiness. Each story time will include age appropriate books, songs and other activities. We are available to visit both childcare providers and preschools.

Story Time Kits

Each themed kit contains books, manipulatives, music CDs or DVDs, flannel board sets, and a folder with activity guides and early literacy tips. The thematic activity guides provide suggestions for crafts, games, songs and rhymes that can be used to enhance the use of the kit materials and support early literacy skill building. These kits may be checked out by childcare providers, in-home providers, preschools and patrons with teacher cards.

There are over 40 available Story Time Kits. Topics include bedtime, classic tales, colors, dinosaurs, the five senses, music, nursery rhymes, pets, school, weather and many more.

Teacher Collections

With a little notice, we can pull items to help reinforce what you are teaching in your classroom. Submit your request online, and a librarian will craft a collection of books and audio materials especially for your class.
