DIY Tutorial: Fairy Terrariums
Terrariums are a cute way to add some green to your life. Decorate your container and build a home for your new plant!
The tutorial was created by Tori Story, the adult/teen services programmer at our Cold Spring Branch. If you have any questions about the tutorial, please email her at tstory@cc-pl.org.
Supplies Needed
- Glass Container
- Sand or Gravel
- Decorative Stones or Beads
- Like the ones used in a fishbowl or landscaping. They must be small enough to fit in your container.
- Air Plant
- Fairy Figure/Decorations
- Such as small toys and cutouts from coloring pages or printouts.
Step 1
Put a layer of sand or gravel on the bottom of the glass container. Go simple, like in the example, or layer/combine materials!
Step 2
Add decorative stones/beads. The amount is up to you.
Step 3
Place your plant in the container.
Step 4
Put the fairy and any other decorations you have in the container. Place the terrarium in its new home and enjoy!
Caring for Air Plants
Air plants need bright and indirect light, like a shady spot next to a window.
Water the air plant by soaking it in room temperature water for 5 to 10 minutes, then gently shake off excess water. Place on a towel or napkin upside down for about 3 hours to completely dry; this is important to avoid root rot. Once dry, place back in the terrarium. Do this every one or two weeks (more often if your space is dry, less often if it’s humid).
