History of El Día de los Libros

First started in 1997, El día de los libros is a nationally recognized and annual celebration of children, families and reading that occurs at library branches across the country.

The celebration borrows from the traditional Mexican holiday of El Día de los Niños, or Day of the Child, which has paid homage to children’s role in society since 1925.

According to the American Library Association, El Día “is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures.”
