Our Favorite Teen Comedies
Teen comedies: They’re snarky, irreverent, sometimes-heartwarming and often sleepover staples.
And, in honor of the new Mean Girls movie coming Jan. 12, we asked our staff to reflect on their favorite flicks of the genre. 🔥📔
Our Favorite Teen Comedies
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
“10 Things I Hate About You has everything. Comedy, romance, young Heath Ledger AND Joseph Gordon Levitt. Julia Stiles as Kat is still EVERYTHING I want to be. My sister was named after this movie (shout out to Bianca).”
– Bella Hemsath, patron services assistant, Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch
“It’s obviously the best one! It’s Shakespeare!”
– Brit Parr, children’s services programmer, Cold Spring Branch

Sky High
“I love how it is so smart and funny for a superhero teen comedy. I still enjoy watching it!”

Not Another Teen Movie
“A celebration AND a spoof of teen movies, Not Another Teen Movie gloriously sends up all your favorites with a razor-sharp (and, at times, quite bawdy) sense of humor. Visual gags abound. You will cry-laugh. A guaranteed good time.”
– Clinton Davis, adult outreach services assistant

“My favorite teen comedies (besides Mean Girls, of course – it’s just so cool) are Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey! These movies are so funny, and full of totally excellent quotes! *Air guitar* Party on, dudes! Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”

Easy A
“This movie puts a teenage twist on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic tale The Scarlet Letter. I personally like that Olive discovers she doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her. She doesn’t have to put any work into dispelling rumors about her because, in the end, people will believe what they want about her. It also takes female sexuality and flips it on its head. It’s the 21st century and women don’t need to feel afraid of their own sexuality.”

She’s the Man
“Normally I can’t stand getting second-hand embarrassment while watching movies or TV shows but I will make every exception for this one. Based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, this movie is full of goal-kicking, gender-bending, girl-powering and is perfect for soccer players, theater kids and fans of Disney’s Mulan alike.”
– Stephanie Daugherty, patron services assistant, Newport Branch
“I love the movie She’s the Man mostly because I love Amanda Bynes, but the whole cast is hilarious. There are so many quotable and laugh-out-loud moments.”
– Molly Walker, children’s services librarian, Cold Spring Branch
“This is an early 2000s take on Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night. Viola Johnson poses as her twin brother, Sebastian, to play soccer at his new boarding school while he gallivants around London. Things get complicated when Viola falls for her roommate Duke, who is in love with Olivia, who is crushing on Sebastian. This movie has some of the most hilariously iconic moments in teen comedy cinema history.”

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World
“Not so long ago…in the mysterious land…of Toronto, Canada…Edgar Wright’s adaptation of writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley’s acclaimed graphic novel series has a little bit of everything. Comedy, hilariously over-the-top action sequences, romance, pop culture references, comic-booky cinematography & visual effects, and tons of energetic grunge-rock music — Plumtree, anyone?
Perhaps most importantly though, the film boasts easily one of the strongest casts of the 2010s, with heavy hitters such as Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman, and many more. Every single actor involved, no matter the size of their role, delivers an iconic performance. They all managed to stay in touch over 10 years later, with everyone reprising their respective roles in the animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which recently released on Netflix!”

Clueless
“Endlessly quotable and whip-smart, Clueless is a ’90s cult classic for good reason. Released in 1995, it was one of the first teen ‘chick flicks’ to adapt classic lit—Jane Austen’s Emma—into a snarky modern movie. Movies like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s the Man and Easy A would follow suit. No Austen adaptation quite captures the novelist’s humor like Clueless does. Alicia Silverstone leads the cast as Cher Horowitz, with Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash and Donald Faison all turning in performances just as iconic as Cher’s yellow plaid ensemble.”
