JC Morgan’s Book Suggestions
I used to run a book club called Real Men Read. It’s still one of our book clubs, but now I run the one that meets on Tuesdays at Cold Spring. One of our staff members once made the joke that it should be called the “Colon Book Club” because all of the titles I chose had a colon in them.
I’ll admit it. I do love some nonfiction. If you like it too, then maybe you’ll like some of these titles that are available in our digital collection right now. At the time of this writing, all of these are available as eBooks and some as audiobooks. You’ll enjoy them! Don’t let the colons scare you!
Never Cry Wolf: Amazing True Story of Life Among Arctic Wolves by Farley Mowat
It might be more fiction than fact in some ways, but it’s an absolutely hilarious account of the author’s mission to document the demise of caribou killed by wolves. (Spoiler: wolves are not the problem.)

The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard
Cherry-Garrard’s account of Robert Falcon Scott’s failed expedition to reach the South Pole ahead of Roald Amundsen is considered to be one of the best adventure books of all time. Cherry-Garrard was one of the first humans to witness the Emperor Penguins’ winter nesting habits made famous in the children’s movie Happy Feet. The Martian by Andy Weir
It’s fiction, yes, but it’s a well-researched, very plausible story of a man trapped on Mars when the rest of his team evacuates during a massive wind storm. It’s also an excellent movie starring Matt Damon.

We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Resistance by David Howarth
This title might sound a little morbid in the present circumstance, but it’s an excellent book about a little known part of the story of WWII. The Allies ran a covert operation to supply the resistance to the Nazis in Norway. Jan Baalstrud was the sole survivor of one of those operations and his story is riveting.

A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean by Tori Murden McClure
Ms. McClure was the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo in a rowboat…one and three quarter times. She was also one of the first women to reach the South Pole on skis. She made the trek simultaneously with another woman. And…she’s from Kentucky. She’s currently the president of Spalding University in Louisville.
