Decoding Coding

Piper Computer Kits teach kids to be tech savvy, and we have some available!

During one of our summer outreach events, one of our new Piper Computer Kits was a hit with Logan Petty, Grade 4, and his dad, Thomas Petty.

“I showed them the kit, and the two of them sat down together and spent at least 20 minutes playing with it,” said Clara Gerner, our Cold Spring Branch’s adult/teen librarian. After his dad went back to work, Logan spent another 40 minutes playing games and developing tech skills.

About Piper Computer Kits

A key feature of Piper Computer Kits is that they teach the basics of coding with more than seven electronic games that kids can code for themselves by following step-by-step tutorials. Kids ages 2-7 are introduced to coding and programming electronics through preloaded projects that allow them to code and program electronic games.

PiperCode, recommended for ages 8-12, uses Blockly by Google, a drag-and-drop coding programming language that lets kids modify and change how electronics work. Kids establish a basic foundation in coding with PiperCode and can easily transition from Blockly to advanced text-based programming.

Sounds complicated? Well, it kind of it. As playpiper.com notes, “Piper is not easy, and it is not designed to be. Any child or adult will at times be challenged, confused or even frustrated. What you will not be is bored.” You will also develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as you learn about building and, of course, coding.
