City Barbeque Food for Thought Series: The Many Lives of Sappho

Tuesday, May 29, 2018
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for the final City Barbeque Food for Thought series event with the return of Professor Kathleen Quinn from the NKU History and Geography Deparment as she talks about Sappho of Lesbos.  Sappho of Lesbos (ca. 630-570 B.C.) is the most famous female poet from the ancient Greek world, and yet concrete details about her life and career on a remote island in the Mediterranean remain frustratingly elusive. From ancient times to the present, Sappho has been an object of curiosity and speculation because of the series of love poems she penned to other women. Yet her poetry also offers insight into the broader culture of ancient Greece: love and marriage, family, old age and death, religious devotion, etc. To explore the many lives of Sappho, this talk will combine evidence from archaeology, from ancient and modern biography, and from Sappho’s own poems.  Food will be provided by Highland Heights City Barbeque.  Register now as spots are limited.
